Pat Quinn Cuts Superintendents High Salaries

Press Release:
Gov. Pat Quinn has taken away the salaries of regional education superintendents but not their duties, a move that raises questions as the new school year approaches.

Lawmakers and school officials want to know who is supposed to inspect schools, check employee backgrounds, certify teachers and do all the other tasks now handled by regional superintendents. The Association of School Administrators says superintendents perform important duties.
But Quinn used his veto power last week to cut all pay for the superintendents and their assistants. He also cut $2 million from their operating budget.

Quinn offered no plan for doing the superintendents' work if they're not paid. He says they should do the work for free, at least for a few months.
The superintendents reject that idea.
