Bolingbrook Election Panel Weighs Challenges To 2 Candidates

The Bolingbrook electoral board is considering whether to keep two Village Board candidates on the ballot for the April election in light of challenges to their nominating petitions.
During a hearing Monday, the board heard arguments from Bolingbrook resident and Du Page Township Trustee Richard Huyser, who charged that petitions for candidates Timothy Olberding and Wayne Macejak contain invalid signatures, addresses and other technical errors that require some signatures to be stricken.
In both cases, an attorney for Huyser has challenged enough signatures to knock the two candidates off the ballot for the April 2 election.

Olberding and Macejak, who are both running independently against three incumbents on the Village Board, denied the charges.
Olberding and Macejak, who are the only challengers to the incumbents, said they will produce affidavits Tuesday from the signers of their petitions stating that the signatures are legitimate.
Olberding and Macejak also questioned the validity of some of the objections, such as objecting to signers who used a common abbreviation for Bolingbrook.
``The intention is to protect the integrity of the process,`` said attorney Steven Prodehl (currently sits on Library Board 2011), who represents Huyser. Many of the required 271 signatures on Olberding`s and Macejak`s nominating petition papers are
``questionable`` and threaten a correct election, he said.
During the hearing, Prodehl went down the list of signatures and pointed out signers who are not registered to vote in the upcoming municipal election, or who signed petitions for opposing candidates. Other signatures Prodehl challenged on the basis that they are illegible, were printed instead of signed, contain ditto marks for addresses and town designations or use unofficial abbreviations such as ``BB`` for Bolingbrook.
``To me, it just seems unfair,`` Olberding said. ``I think somebody just doesn`t want us on the ballot.``
The incumbent candidates include James Meyer, Wayne McMillan and Mark Stanich. The electoral board includes Mayor Roger Claar, Clerk Carol Penning, and Senior Trustee Margaret Danhof.
The electoral board will makes its decision later this week.
Five candidates in the municipal election four years ago were eliminated from the ballot.
