Some residents are wondering what happened to others that have entered the election race and are not on the ballot. This is the update.
Bonnie Kurowski-Alicea entered the race early on, pushing herself to get on the ballot. She collected over 1000 signatures and submitted the top number that would be allowed. She did this by walking door to door, campaigning, and devoting 6 weeks to her campaign in the early onset. When the objections came in for her residency, she knew there would be issues. Back in 2009 she left town for a while, for the safety of her family. After Trustee Lawler and Mayor Claar accused her public ally on TV of contributing to someone’s death, she was stalked and threatened by people that believed such an erroneous allegation. She returned in time to run a valid election, but since the election board was made up of the same people she ran against in 2009, there was no chance of her getting on the ballot.
Before the objection to her petition, she gave an interview to the Number Crunchers. She knew ahead of time that they would not allow her to run, as she was too big of a threat to the opposition. Since she understood the full extent of local political bullying, she came out swinging hard for her campaign so that they would focus their attention on her and forget the other candidates. In doing so, other strong candidates were finally allowed on the Bolingbrook ballot. Although she wanted to run for office, she knew that the opposition would see fit to not allow her a second chance. Even knowing this, she placed her time and money into the election, assisted other candidates, and kept her head up strong. Ultimately, she became a hero to local political candidates that were able to get on the ballot due to her selflessness and dedication to Bolingbrook. She has announced her candidacy for Mayor in 2013 and she has shown the public how strong and dedicated she is. She will be a top runner in two years. She was spotted this weekend putting up banners on Weber Road for the Independent Party.
On the other spectrum, Wheatland Township Democrat Felix Greco announced his candidacy for Trustee online and through local web sites. He was a strong fighter for the local unions, as he was a Union based Firefighter. He spent his time collecting his signatures. Right before they were due, we heard about his meeting with the Mayor.
Within days of the meeting, the BR received a statement from him dropping out of the race. When he was questioned, he stated that it was not because of his meeting with the Mayor and that he was not in support of the incumbents. He stated the timing was not right for him.
However, this week, we have pictures of the incumbents signs in his front yard. We are not sure what happened in that meeting with the Mayor, but he has done a flip flop on loyalty. His choice was to support and run on behalf, and for, the Unions of Bolingbrook, and against the mass layoffs Mr. Claar has been making of them. He sided with the enemy.
In finality, and as the story goes… Bonnie is a local political hero, Felix is a local political fallen zero.
